  • 23% of 65-74-year olds have severe periodontal disease
    • Smoking is the leading risk factor
    • Periodontal disease is associated with cardiovascular disease
  • About 30% of adults 65 and older have dentures, compared to 46% 20 years ago
  • Oral and pharyngeal cancers are diagnosed in 30,000 adults (mostly elderly) year; 8,000 die from these diseases each year
  • Most seniors take prescription &/or over-the-counter drugs. Many medications have the side effect of dry mouth, which increases the risk of dental caries.
